| Hippopotomization |
|
After the blizzard, this car was completely covered with snow. Since
no one really drives it, it was likely to stay that way. Jen thought
we should sculpt it. Both of us thought it looked like a hippopotamus.
So, after looking up some hippopotamus websites, I set out to turn it
into an icy river-mammal.

Here's what we started with. The snow piled up to more than a foot.
The wind pushed it around a great deal, so some places had less, some
had more.

I started by shaping the basic form of the hippo. The eye ridges are
very prominent. The toughest part was getting around the far side of
the car, which hasn't been shoveled in months.

The shape of the mouth is very distinctive, and important in creating
the overall hippopotamoid impression.

I think it came out rather well.

Smoothed out and with a few finishing touches. Using an all-white
medium isn't ideal, because it's difficult to create contrast. The
light becomes very important.
