Hurray! Gayle knocked on our door first thing to tell us that my suitcase
had been located. As suspected, Rose Lucas had it and she and her husband were staying up
the road in another condo. They drove down a little after 9 and the luggage exchange took
place. What had happened was that they had noticed their bag was missing right away and had
realized what had happened when they saw the identical suitcase sitting there unclaimed. Rose
left a note in the window of the ticket booth, but by the time we got down to the dock, the
ticket window was closed and the workers knew nothing about it.
So I ran inside and went to open the suitcase. Ack! The Lucases had managed to lock one side
of it. Momentary fright, but Dave proved handy with two paperclips. With great happiness, I
showered and put on fresh clothes.

We then walked down to town to Cruz Bay Water Sports and I
rented snorkel gear for the week
(Dave had borrowed some gear from a coworker). The man who helped us was very nice. Coincidently
he had studied Classics and had done underwater archaeology. We took a taxi out to Annaberg
(on Gayle's recommendation) and walked out to the end of Waterlemon Bay. We saw a pelican diving for fish.

It was a rocky shore, but the snorkeling was great. We saw
starfish and a stingray plus many other kinds of fish and
coral. At one point I lost my snorkel, but Dave dove down and retrieved
it. Thank goodness for the clear water!
After we had our fill of snorkeling, we walked back a
little ways to a sandy beach. We ate another
picnic lunch and did the lying-in-the-sun-reading thing. There were many mountain goats and mongooses
around. Suddenly a dark cloud loomed over us and the skies opened up in a torrential downpour.
We quickly gathered our gear together and pulled our beach blanket over us like a tent. Unlike a
tent, it was NOT waterproof, but it succeeded in keeping our things from getting completely
drenched. The rain lasted about 10 minutes.
After drying off, we decided to hike up to some ruins we could see from the beach. Getting up there
was pretty easy and it turned out to be an old house of sorts. It afforded quite a nice view.

On the way down we decided to take the Johnny Horn Trail instead of going back the way we came
from the beach. It was a very long trail that got quite steep and difficult at times. Once,
the next climb looked so rough, we sat and rested and shared an apple. A baby goat came up behind
us and watched us, bleating every now and then. We also saw a cat sleeping high up on some rocks.
We finally ended up in Coral Bay and took the dollar bus back to Cruz Bay.
After we got back to our condo and showered, Dave barbequed some veggies marinated in a garlic sauce while I made curry rice. A yummy dinner... followed by some Ben & Jerry's.
