Our last full day! We decided to make it a beach day. We started by going out to the
Francis Bay trail, which is often described as a favorite of birders. We didn't see much --
just a hummingbird with a spikey crest and a gray kingbird. I think a combination of the
drought conditions and spring migrations have taken a toll on the visible bird populations. Beyond the Francis Bay trail was Francis Bay, which turned out to be a very nice beach. We both built sand castles. Jen spotted a Lesser Antillean Bullfinch along the edge of the vegetation. We ate lunch and watched the waves and sat for a long time.
Building sand castles. Guess whose
is whose. Eventually we decided to move on. Selecting Cinnamon Bay as our next destination, as we had heard there was an archaeological dig going on there. What we hadn't counted on was the lack of taxis that far out on the island. We started walking along the road in hopes of being picked up, but it took more than half and hour of hilly walking before we were able to flag down a passing taxi. Cinnamon Bay turned out to be a very nice, very expansive bay. The only problem was that the wind would pick up loose sand and blast us. I fell asleep for a bit. Over the course of the day I got the only real sunburn so far -- other times I as more careful with the SPF 45. The archaeologists, unfortunately were not digging today. We saw the excavation pit, but it was covered with tarp.
Relaxing at Cinnamon Bay. Around 4 we headed back to shower and change. We then went down into town to have dinner. We had selected an Italian place earlier. I had a rum martini (a lot of flavored rums in a martini glass) that really put me under. The place was called Panini Beach and a part from our rather condescending host, it was really nice. Right on the water, and with decent food. After dessert and a bit more souvenier shopping, we walked back via Starfish market (where we picked up another bottle of Cruzan coconut rum), scaled the EXTREME VERTICAL CHALLENGE one last time, packed a little, and went to bed. |
