Jennifer standing on the stairs up to the keep of Conisbrough castle, a Norman castle about half an hour from Sheffield.
The keep of Conisbrough Castle is the first round Norman keep -- all the ones before it were square. It is extremely well-built, and in very good condition. I don't know if it was restored or just never robbed out, as the rest of the castle seems to have been.
Looking up the Keep to... blue sky!! Amazing! We haven't seen it in a while.
Jennifer trying out the head of the table. This is the Great Hall on the third level of the keep. The stairs go up to the second level, which was mostly for storage and servanty things -- the lord of the hall would go straight past. The great hall has a large fireplace, just out of view to the right.
Stairs from the great hall down to the entrance level. Conisbrough castle is, incidentally, the setting of Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe.
Checking out the view. This arrow loop looks out over the fields to the south of the castle. It didn't come out very well, but the castle is currently being besieged by a group of skateboarding teenagers.
Above the great hall is the lord's bedchamber. They only would have slept there in times of great peril though... Above that is top of the Keep. Windy!
Looking down at the rest of the castle and the town of Conisbrough from the top of the keep.
The stairs up to the top of the keep.
Looking down the garderobe. Look out below!
The castle grounds. Not in as good a condition as the keep, which was constructed with better stones.
Jennifer enjoying the surroundings.
