Katy decided to spend her spring break with us this year. She was particularly interested in visiting Hull (where a friend of hers will be studying) and Liverpool. I couldn't make it to Hull (Jen and I will probably go anyway to see the new aquarium, which opened yesterday), but I was interested in going back to Liverpool. Jen, as before, had class.

I didn't take many pictures this time, because we saw many of the same places as my previous trip.

What I was most excited to see was the Western Approaches. This 50,000 sq. foot bunker was set within 11 foot thick concrete walls. It housed a self-sufficient command center from which the Allies controlled the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II. One of the interesting aspects of it is that the staff was almost entirely women.

Besides the Western Approaches, we saw the Tate Gallery's Liverpool branch. The Tate focuses on modern British art. The northern gallery is much smaller than their London museums, but it is very well designed.

Katy ponders her master plan from her underground control center.
Katy and I had afternoon tea at a small "Victorian Tea Room" hidden inside a lady's fashion boutique. Nearby was a ruined church, turned into a park after the war. Katy stopped to take some pictures, and I did the "making of" photography.
